A somber design to accompany a story on the 2017 Las Vegas shooting and the grim pattern repeating itself in the U.S.
The editors ultimately chose this concept (which had an end-of-day deadline) over news imagery for the weekend cover because it reflected Joanna Slater’s feature: how mass shootings have become a part of American life.
